Gas Weather Outlook

Printer–friendly version of prospectus

Gas Weather Outlook (GWO), produced jointly by PIRA and MDA EarthSat, combines the weather forecasting expertise of MDA EarthSat with PIRA's supply/demand estimates to create a unique product that accurately measures the change in gas storage. Distributed on a daily basis during the winter withdrawal season (November-March) and on a weekly basis during the summer injection season (April-October), the reports provide forecasts for EIA storage data, including a national figure and a regional breakdown, as well as weather analysis and estimates of heating and cooling degree days two weeks into the future. The service provides subscribers with insights about near-term cooling/heating demand and gas storage levels, which are important in analyzing shot-term gas markets.

GWO's coverage of natural gas storage withdrawals for the winter heating season begins in November. The winter edition of GWO is sent to subscribers daily, from Nov. 1 to Mar. 31.  It features:
  • Forecasts of Energy Information Administration storage data extending three weeks into the future, reflecting the latest information about gas fundamentals and the weather outlook. In addition, on Mondays, PIRA forecasts that week's EIA figure with a regional breakdown. On Tuesdays, you receive a preliminary regional breakdown of the forecast EIA number for the next week; on each of the remaining days, you receive preliminary forecasts of the EIA figure two weeks out, which may change according to weather patterns;
  • PIRA's Monday discussion of key factors influencing the storage forecast;
  • EarthSat's discussion of the short- and medium-term weather outlook, along with weather maps;
  • Weekly Forecasts of heating degree days and R/C heating demand in key regions.
GWO's coverage of natural gas storage injections for the summer cooling season begins in April. This timely report is valuable in assessing short-term gas market trends. The summer edition of GWO is sent to subscribers every Monday and Tuesday, from Apr. 1 to Oct. 31. The summer edition provides the following:
