PIRA University Seminars Are Taught by Seasoned Energy Industry Professionals
Averaging more than 25 years of industry experience, PIRA University’s faculty provides an unsurpassed real-world perspective on the fundamentals and dynamics of energy markets worldwide. Utilizing their in-depth expertise, the instructors lead you through the processes that PIRA uses to determine supply and demand fundamentals and to interpret these factors — along with other price drivers, such as logistical constraints, investment markets and geopolitical risks — to establish near- and long-term price forecasts.

Following is a list of senior faculty presenters that regularly contribute to PIRA University seminars:

Dr. Gary N. Ross (CEO) has led PIRA from its inception in 1976 and is a leading authority on worldwide energy markets. As Managing Director of the Global Oil Group, he is responsible for near- and long-term oil market forecasts. He advises many governments on energy markets and energy policy issues and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Gary has a PhD in economics from the City University of New York.

Dr. Mark A. Schwartz (President) directs the PIRA University program. He also heads up PIRA’s Scenario Planning Service, working with the Global Oil and Natural Gas groups to evaluate key assumptions underlying their outlooks and to develop plausible alternative scenarios. Before joining PIRA in 2002, he was the Chief Economist of ExxonMobil Corp. During his 25 years at Exxon he also had assignments in International Gas Marketing, Upstream Planning, Treasurers, and Corporate Planning functions. Mark holds a PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Gregory J. Shuttlesworth (Executive Director) founded PIRA’s North American Natural Gas Group in 1981. He is a principal author of PIRA’s Gas Forecast Monthly, Gas Trade Monthly, and Gas Flash Weekly. Prior to PIRA, he held the positions of Senior Analyst at the petroleum-consulting firm of W.J. Levy Associates and Energy Economist at the Chase Manhattan Bank. Greg is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University. He has a BA and MBA, and completed post-MBA studies in economics.

Ira B. Joseph (Executive Director) oversees PIRA’s European Energy and Global LNG services. Prior to joining PIRA in 1999, he worked at Energy Intelligence Group as editor-in-chief of World Gas Intelligence and senior editor of Petroleum Intelligence Weekly. Ira holds a BA from the University of Michigan and an MA in international economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Allan M. Stewart (Executive Director) directs the analysis of North American electric power, coal and other related fuel and emissions markets. Prior to joining PIRA in 1992, Allan spent over 18 years with Consolidated Edison Company in various senior positions. He earned a B.S. in civil engineering at the State University of New York in Buffalo and an M.B.A. in finance and investments from Adelphi University; he has taken post-masters coursework in economics at NYU.
David A. Zinamon (Managing Director) specializes in refinery operations, NGLs, and the environment. He authors PIRA’s NGL Market Forecast and is responsible for the World Refinery Database. Prior to joining PIRA in 1984, he worked at Chem Systems, Celanese Chemical, GAF Corp., and Airco. Dave has a BCHE from City College of New York and an MBA from Rutgers University.

Richard (Rick) Joswick (Managing Director) develops PIRA’s outlook for crude and product pricing, refinery margins, and inter-regional supply balances. He authors the European Oil Market Forecast and was study leader for PIRA’s Bottom of the Barrel and Heart of the Barrel studies. He joined PIRA in 2004 after a 20-year stint with ExxonMobil in supply logistics, planning, refining, and research. Rick has MS and BS degrees in chemical engineering from Rutgers.

Richard M. Redash (Managing Director) focuses on short-term North American natural gas market fundamentals, coauthoring the Gas Flash Weekly and Gas Forecast Monthly. Prior to PIRA, Rich was a market analyst at NYMEX and Consolidated Edison of New York. He has a bachelor’s of business administration from Pace University and an MBA from NYU.

Morris J. Greenberg (Managing Director) develops short-term and long-term regional electricity-pricing models based on detailed analysis of North American electric supply, demand and pricing. He has over 25 years of experience in consulting, planning and finance. Prior to PIRA, he held senior positions at Lehman Brothers and WEFA Energy Group. Morris has a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and an M.S. in economics from Temple University.

Roman Kramarchuk (Managing Director) heads up PIRA’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions and North American Environmental Markets services. Prior to joining PIRA in 2005, he helped develop the CAIR and CAMR (Mercury) Rules and the BART Guidelines with the U.S. EPA’s Clean Air Markets Division. Roman held prior positions at PG&E NEG and with PA Consulting / PHB Hagler Bailly, and also spent several years working on USAID- and World Bank-funded projects. He has an M.P.P. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and a B.A. in economics and B.S.E. in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Frederick W.A. (Bill) Fuller (Sr. Director) had over 30 years of energy forecasting and analytical experience with Exxon International before joining PIRA in 1997. He oversees PIRA’s analysis and forecasting of near-term industry oil balances, with particular emphasis on international supplies. Bill has a BS in chemical engineering from Cornell University.

Dr. Gary Eisen (Sr. Director) has over 20 years of economic forecasting experience and is responsible for PIRA’s near-term petroleum product demand forecasting. Previously, he was Manager of Economic Research for Louis Dreyfus Energy. Gary has a PhD in economics from the New School of Social Research and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Harvey L. Harmon (Sr. Director) is a primary contributor to both PIRA’s North American Natural Gas and Global LNG groups. He joined PIRA after 25 years in analysis of gas demand, pipeline capacity, and transport, with emphasis on competition at various citygates. Most recently he was the Director of Natural Gas Import/Export Activities and Senior LNG Policy Advisor at the U.S. DOE. Harvey holds an MS in ocean engineering from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from the University of Texas.

Michelle Patron (Sr. Director) oversees global political risk coverage. Prior to joining PIRA in 2004, Michelle was a Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and conducted energy research at Deutsche Bank. She spent five years as an international policy advisor at the U.S. DOE, and has also held positions with the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, the International Energy Agency, and the White House. Michelle holds a BA from Columbia and an MA from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Bruno Brunetti (Sr. Director) manages the European Electricity Service and is a contributor to the International Coal Service and the European Emissions Trading System Market Outlook. Prior to joining PIRA in 2001, he was at Caminus. He began his career in strategic planning at Enel. He has authored energy market studies and many articles, including a significant contribution on the restructuring of the Italian electricity market. Bruno graduated magna cum laude in economics and management from Bari University (Italy) and obtained a masters in energy economics from the ENSPM / Institut Français du Pétrole (Paris).

Daniel J. Klein (Sr. Director) heads up the International Coal Services and is the primary author of the International Thermal Coal Market Forecast and International Coal Markets Scorecard, as well as collaborating on the short- and long-term outlooks for the U.S. Coal Market. Prior to directing the International Coal Service, Dan was a member of PIRA’s North American Electricity team, beginning in 2003. He has a B.A. in economics from Calvin College.

Robert (Bob) Roth (Sr. Director) joined PIRA in 2008 to lead PIRA’s U.S. coal market analysis. He is responsible for the U.S. Coal Market Forecast, U.S. Coal Stockpile Estimates as well as assisting with other coal and electricity reports. Bob comes to PIRA from Louis Dreyfus Highbridge Energy Services, where he led their U.S. coal and emissions analytics. Prior to LDH, he served as Director of Energy Economics at Peabody Energy. He began his career in the electric power industry spending 15 years with Illinois Power Company and Progress Energy Corp in a variety of roles. He holds an M.S. and a B.S. in economics from Illinois State University.
